Mikkey Dee on Motorhead’s Rock Hall Nomination, Not Being Recognized as a Nominated Member
Motorhead being recognized as a 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nomination is an honor long overdue, and it’s one drummer Mikkey Dee thinks the late Lemmy Kilmister would’ve greatly appreciated.
Dee spoke to Billboard about the nomination and said, “I remember when we won a Grammy [in 2005] he [Lemmy] was prouder than any of us. He really glowed. I said, ‘Lem, this is pretty f-cking cool,’ and he said, ‘You’re right, mate. This is great.’ And when we got our hands in the Rock Walk on Sunset in Hollywood, that was also a moment for him, and he was really proud. And this here [Rock Hall nomination] is the king of kings, if you will, so he would’ve been very, very proud.”
Of course, what many fans will likely take issue with is the fact that only the original lineup of Kilmister, guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor are being recognized with the nomination. Dee has been Motorhead’s drummer since 1992 through to Kilmister’s death in 2015, while guitarist Phil Campbell had been in the band since 1984.
“That is pure wrong, I would say, and I know Phil will be very disappointed, too,” said Dee. “We’ve been carrying the flag for 25 years together, and actually brought Motörhead to what it was. We did 25 years out of the 40. The original band lasted just a few years. They started it off, but as Lemmy said himself they wouldn’t have lasted another six months doing that lineup. I don’t think we would’ve been where we are today without the 25 years we spent touring.”
Despite the severe oversight, Dee confirmed to Billboard that he and Campbell would attend and perform at the induction ceremony.
The 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction class will be announced in January 2020.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2020 Induction Ceremony, presented by Klipsch Audio, takes place at Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio on May 2, 2020.
