How To Make Your Facebook Avatar in a Few Easy Steps

You’ve seen them everywhere. The Facebook avatar is taking over your newsfeed. And as weird as some of them might be, you’ll probably give in and make one. (Lots of you already did and shared them with us!)

But where do you start if you want to make your own Facebook avatar? We’re here to help. Follow the few steps below and you’ll be up and running with your adorable little Facebook avatar in no time! Note: You can’t create your Facebook avatar from the desktop version of Facebook. It has to be on a mobile device. But you can use it later on your desktop after it’s created.

While this seems like a lot of steps, it’s really not as bad as it looks. Once you get going on your own Facebook avatar, you’ll be just fine.

• Step 1 – Click Try It

  The quickest way to start your Facebook avatar is to just click "TRY IT" when you see it on someone else's post. But it's not always there for some reason. So if it's not, move on to Step 2. Otherwise, skip to Step 4. Note: You can't CREATE your avatar from Facebook on your desktop computer. You have to use a mobile device. You will be able to USE it on desktop once it's created though.

• Step 2 – Click On Your Hamburger Stack

  If you don't see the try it button, you'll need to go through your menus to find this. Click on the little hamburger stack in the bottom right corner of your app.

• Step 3 – Click on “See More”

  Down under all those random icons they seem to place, you'll see a "See More" option. Go click that.
• Step 4 – Click Avatars

  Once you're under See More, Avatars should be one of the first options available.

• Step 5 – Loading up

  Share

  Now your load screen for the Facebook avatar should pop up.

• Step 6 – Overview Time

  Share

  Facebook is proud of these little guys, so they are gonna show you the overall basics.
• Step 7 – Sticker Usage

  Share

  Once you're done you're gonna be able to use these in sticker format. That'll be fun. Maybe.

• Step 8 – Select Your Skin Tone

  OK, so we're now ready to start our Facebook avatar journey. First is skin tone. This was hard for me and I had to go back and revise mine a couple times.

• Step 9 – Hair Time

  Now we get into the meat of our avatar. Let's start with our hair. But man this is tough without being able to see ourselves...
• Step 10 – Look At Yourself

  Well lookie there. If you click on the little mirror icon in the upper right corner under the check, it'll pull up your camera so you can see yourself. This is way easier now.

• Step 11 – Get Your Details

  Go through and refine all the things you want to. Hair, eyes, mouth, nose, lips and the colors of all those things too.

• Step 12 – Polish It Off

  I had to go through and find some specific details like facial hair and stuff like that. And then I went back to me to see if this looked fairly accurate. I suppose it does.
• Step 13 – Outfit Time

  Jason Isbell says don't call what you're wearing an outfit, but we'll let it slide for Facebook avatar purposes. Here, I'm going with a snazzy purple suit, so I feel less like I'm stuck at home in a t-shirt all the time.

• Step 14 – Finish Off

  Once you're done, you'll click the check in the upper right corner and Facebook will show you how beautiful you look in avatar format. I think I look better than me, if we're being honest here.

• Step 15 – Stickers!

  Stickers are always fun. Facebook reminding us that we can use these anywhere, including as comments on posts. That's gonna be fun.
• Step 16 – Stickers Personalized

  Share

  Now Facebook is going to show you how your avatar stickers look. I'm a big fan of the guy taking a bath in his suit, personally.

• Step 17 – And We’re Almost Done

  Here's your final product. You can choose to share it (the arrow up top right), or use stickers (the little square peeling guy), or you can edit it again (the pencil).

• Step 18 – Share That Little Guy

  Share

  What good is making your Facebook avatar if you don't show everybody else! You can make it your temporary profile picture, or just share it to your feed.
• Step 19 – How To Use Them

  Share

  So now that you have it, what can you do with it? Well if you are commenting on any post, you'll see the little happy face next to the comment field. Click that.

• Step 20 – Use Those Stickers!

  Share

  And then you're gonna pick the sticker you want to use and comment away! Have fun!
