Lindsey Buckingham celebrates his birthday today (October 3). While his entire body of work should be celebrated, one song he wrote in particular often sticks out. Years after its release, it remains one of the best breakup songs ever.

That got us thinking about all of the other incredible breakup songs in the classic rock genre. (Spoiler: There are A LOT.) Somehow, we’ve narrowed down our favorites to a tight eight-track playlist. We sincerely hope you’ll enjoy it in honor of Buckingham’s birthday. Perhaps, this list may find you while you’re working through a breakup of your own. If so, grab the tissues, because this one is about to get sad. Also, there are plenty of fish in the sea. You’re going to be already and will get through this.

  This list certainly would be incomplete without this ridiculously hooky Greg Kihn Band track. They truly don't write 'em like this anymore.

• Joan Jett and the The Blackhearts – “I Hate Myself For Loving You”

  This is easily one of Jett’s strongest tracks. Plus, that riff? Killer! Also, who couldn't relate to this song at one time or another?
• J. Geils Band – “Love Stinks”

  Can anyone else think of this song without thinking about 'The Wedding Singer'?  Because we can’t. Also, by a show of hands, who else has had the blues, the reds and the pinks?

• Bob Dylan – “It Ain’t Me Babe”

  This Dylan classic is as beautiful melodically as it is lyrically biting. If you're looking for an interesting cover, seek out Nancy Sinatra's rendition. You'll thank us later.

• U2 – “With Or Without You”

  Haunting and painful, whenever U2 play this one live, it always brings the house down. It's no wonder it was the lead single off 'The Joshua Tree'!
• The Rolling Stones – “Angie”

  "Angie" is the perfect song for capturing that moment when two people in a relationship both realize it’s time to go their separate ways. It's poetic, gut-wrenching and one of the best ballads ever from the Stones.

• The Cars – “Drive”

  *Sniffs* I’m not crying…YOU’RE CRYING! For real, if this classic song from The Cars has never gotten you in the feels, you've never really experienced heartbreak. Frankly, we're a little jealous of you right about now.
