Melissa Etheridge Reveals David Crosby Was Sperm Donor to Many Couples
David Crosby was the infamous sperm donor to Melissa Etheridge and her ex, Julie Cypher, back in the ’90s. As it turns out, the late Crosby is actually the biological father to far more children than expected.
Etheridge revealed this in a new interview with People. While the singer-songwriter did not specify how many children Crosby has from being a sperm donor, she did say, “We’re still finding kids from David Crosby out in the world. My daughter’s like, ‘I have another half-sister.'”
Crosby is the biological father to Bailey Jean, 27, and Beckett, who sadly died in May 2020 at age 21 from an opioid overdose.
In January 2023, Crosby died at age 81. At the time, a cause of death wasn’t revealed, but former bandmate Graham Nash shared in April 2023 that Crosby was battling COVID-19 at the time of his death.
During an interview on Kyle Meredith with…, Nash said, “He was rehearsing for a show to do in Los Angeles with a full band. After three days of rehearsals, he felt a little sick.”
He continued, “And he’d already had COVID, and he had COVID again. And so he went home and decided that he would take a nap, and he never woke up. But he died in his bed, and that is fantastic.”
Nash noted that Crosby “had a good life” and marveled at his storytelling abilities. Their relationship was strained, but Nash said, “I loved him dearly, and looking back, what separated us … it was just foolish stuff, really.”
David Crosby: Advice Columnist
Crosby took on a unique role in April 2019 with Rolling Stone by signing on as an advice columnist. The singer-songwriter’s column, aptly named “Ask Croz,” had him answering reader questions on a variety of topics. These topics ranged from a teen struggling with a fear of death to how to try edibles properly.
Crosby's final column features eight questions. The whole column is worth a read, as is every installment of “Ask Croz.” There is one question that seems to stick out the most, and it closes out the column. A baby boomer reader named Richard laments how disappointed he is in his generation. He said he thought when boomers got to be “in charge” the world would be full of “peace, love, and understanding.” He bluntly asks Croz, “What the f-ck happened?”
Croz begins, “Well, I’ve asked myself the same thing. I’m an idealist. I wanted to think that we could do better. I think there is an innate goodness in human beings and that it’s natural for them to head that way.”
He continues, “We are trying to evolve as human beings to the point where we don’t have ego, and anger, and greed, and lust running our affairs. I don’t know if we’re going to make it. I believe that we will, but that’s mainly because I need to believe that we will to keep going.”
Crosby beautifully concludes, “Whether that helps you or not, I don’t know. My suggestion is don’t lose your idealism. Just be patient and keep trying. If we quit trying, it all goes in the sh-tter.”
