’Simpsons’ Writer Responds to Duff McKagan’s Claim of Being Inspiration for Duff Beer
Duff McKagan claims he was the inspiration behind the name Duff Beer on the long-running animated series The Simpsons. However, his claim is being refuted.
Original Simpsons writer and producer Jay Kogen told TMZ, “We named it Duff because it’s a synonym for butt, tushy, booty, and so on … Duff is a beer for people who sat on their fat ass all day.”
According to IMDb, Kogen is credited as a producer/supervising producer on 55 episodes of The Simpsons from 1990-1992. He also has writing credits on 10 episodes ranging from 1990-1993. Additionally, Kogen was a writer/co-producer on The Tracy Ullman Show, where The Simpsons famously originated in the late ’80s.
As previously reported, McKagan told Stereogum that he believed he was the inspiration behind Duff Beer. He mentioned how he was once refered to as “Duff, the King of Beers.” McKagan notes, “But this is 1988, 1989 and our management, I remember they called me and said some arthouse-like cartoon wants to use your name as the beer, like a college arthouse cartoon.”
Various figures involved with The Simpsons have denied McKagan was the inspiration behind Duff Beer. However, the bassist said, ” … I think it’s very probably business savvy of them to say that’s not true, but if you just do your own math behind it, look at when they started off with the King of Beers, and I had my King of Beers belt I wore all the time.”
McKagan stated he doesn’t want any sort of cut of Duff Beer merchandise, but he implied that people at The Simpsons should just come clean if he is, in fact, the inspiration behind the name.
What’s Next for Guns N’ Roses?
If Slash is to be believed, next year might be a big one for Guns N’ Roses.
The guitarist told Loudwire Nights, “I’m going into the studio with the Conspirators, getting a new record done and then after that, 2025 is all about Guns N’ Roses.”
Slash didn’t detail much and only said, “We’re trying to get some things going with that.” However, he noted a small tour next summer is potentially in the works.
Back in May, Slash told the Daily Star, “Guns N’ Roses are trying to make their own record, and I’m working with them in that capacity.”
Guns N’ Roses have been pretty tight-lipped over new music. The last notable comment came from Slash in October 2022. The guitarist said, in part, “I want to go in and cut a whole brand new record at some point. Probably sooner than later. But other than that, we have stuff [that’s still] got to come out. So that’s gonna be coming out piecemeal over the next… few months or something like that.”
