The 15 Halloween Candy Types You Shouldn’t Give to Toddlers
With Halloween just days away, it’s important for parents to know which treats and sweets are fine for their young child to eat. And even more crucially, they should know which ones are NOT safe for kids. Fortunately, the parenting website BabyCenter has released a comprehensive list of which treats to avoid giving your kiddos during the spooky season.
According to medical experts, children younger than four years old should avoid eating the following Halloween candies:
- M&M’s
- Peanut M&M’s
- Reese’s Pieces
- Twizzlers
- Gummy Bears
- Skittles
- Milk Duds
- Whoppers
- Jawbreakers
- Blow Pops
- Tootsie Pops
- Jolly Ranchers
- Sour Patch Kids
- Candy Corn
- Hot Tamales
The reason you should refrain from giving these particular candies to your young child is explained by Dr. Elizabeth Donner in this BabyCenter article. “You basically want to avoid anything round, chewy, or gummy if your child is 3 or younger. Candies that fit these criteria are more likely to cause a choking incident in young kids and should be avoided entirely.”
It’s also recommended that parents stay wary of non-edible products that could be given to their children for Halloween. Candy wrappers, stickers, bouncy balls and small toys can very easily be accidentally consumed by children and pose as a choking hazard as well.
But not to worry, your kids can still enjoy some more child-friendly Halloween sweets and treats! It’s recommended that they stick to chocolate products, as those melt and shrink in your mouth while you eat. So candies like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Twix and Snickers bars are a-ok. Larger treats are also good to go as they pose less of a chocolate hazard, i.e. animal crackers, cookies and cupcakes.
So if you’re taking your kids trick-or-treating this weekend, just make sure you follow these guidelines so they can enjoy a happy and safe Halloween! And if you ask me, they should avoid candy corn even as they grow up. Not because they’re still a choking hazard; they’re just gross and should be avoided at all costs.
