Billy Joel’s ‘We Didn’t Start The Fire’ Inspires New History Podcast
A new podcast has just premiered that will breakdown all of the moments, people and other events mentioned in Billy Joel’s 1989 hit “We Didn’t Start The Fire.”
The podcast is called (obviously) We Didn’t Start The Fire but also goes by the shortened acronym of WDSTF. Per the podcast’s homepage, “Harry Truman, Doris Day, Red China, Johnnie Ray…Can Billy Joel help us disentangle one of the most complex yet relatively unexplored periods in modern history? Investigating the fraught nature of American, Korean and Cuba-Soviet Union relations from 1949 – 1991, We Didn’t Start The Fire is a history podcast with a lyrical twist.”

The podcast’s homepage also notes, “Each episode, a new line from Billy Joel’s seminal song is used to unravel a different topic at the heart of this catalytic moment in time. Co-hosted by broadcaster, writer and YouTuber Katie Puckrik, former host of Channel 4’s The Word, and Tom Fordyce, the pair will be assisted by a different guest expert every week, from specialist academics to pop culture aficionados. Join them as we connect the dots between American cinema starlets and the rise of communism in East Asia…”
In a statement to U.K.’s Prolific North, Fordyce said, “We saw the song as a perfect way to guide podcast listeners through those years, and Katie and I are learning a lot from making the show. Even if you don’t consider yourself a history buff, I think the series will grab your interest.”
The first episode on Harry Truman can be heard at CrowdNetwork.co.uk and on all major podcast platforms.
