Stimulus Check Update: A Scaled Down COVID-19 Relief Package Is Up For Debate
Hopefully, another Stimulus check is in our future as House Democrats have unveiled a scaled-down $2.2 trillion coronavirus aid package.
Per the New York Post, “This package is $1.2 billion less than the version that passed the lower chamber in May, would include a second round of $1,200 checks to most Americans and bring back a $600-a-week jobless benefit.”
They add that previous coronavirus relief packages were negotiated between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, but nothing ever gained steam. The hope is that the newest proposal brings White House negotiators back to the table.
Nancy Pelosi spoke about the new proposal, saying, “We’ve come down $1 trillion, and they need to come up because we have to crush this virus. It takes money to crush the virus. It takes money to make the schools safe. It takes money to put money in people’s pockets.”
The New York Post adds that this proposal will send $436 billion to state and local governments and $225 billion to colleges and universities if passed. It will also deliver another round of subsidies to businesses under the Paycheck Protection Program.
