Trey Songz Speaks Out Regarding Recent Street Namings
It’s been over a week since a region in front of the White House on 16th Street was renamed “Black Lives Matter Plaza.” A myriad of people shared social media posts celebrating the street naming. However, a ton of people also deemed the action as simply “performative.” And singer Trey Songz has given his opinion on the general notion.
“Naming streets is cool but don’t forget we got a Martin Luther King Jr. in every hood & that changed nothing,” Songz tweeted. “Keep pushing.”

But the man who designed the street sign that hangs over “Black Lives Matter Plaza” is proud, as WUSA9 reports. “I believe every generation gets that moment where it’s like, ‘Boom, this is the defining moment where the world changed after that,’ and I do believe we’re in that moment now,” Wayne Pettus said.
“In particular, it gives me so much pride and joy because of what it means. There’s a direct message, and the message is very clear,” Pettus said. “I’ve seen a lot of pride in the sign and what it means, so that’s the happiest thing I can take away, is that the sign is making people proud.”
“I never really thought the two worlds would collide, to be honest with you,” said Pettus.
Yesterday my team and I got a chance to make history when DC’s Mayor Bowser had us create these #blacklivesmatter signs to be installed in DC! I so proud was of her when they asked me to design it! In fact, we are all so proud of her for making her stance clear! pic.twitter.com/PqNlLO0RCd
