Roger Daltrey on Why Hotel Managers Loved When The Who Trashed Hotel Rooms
The Who were notorious for trashing hotel rooms back in the day, but according to Roger Daltrey, hotel managers actually didn’t terribly mind when the band tore rooms to shreds.
Daltrey told U.K.’s The Mirror that hotel managers “used to love us” because the band would pay for the damage in cash “…and then they claimed in on the insurance.”
Daltrey recalled one hotel in New York and said, “…I swear to you I reckon that Keith Moon decorated every room in that hotel because he smashed one, we’d pay in cash, the manager would claim the insurance. We would leave everything we would be kosher. And when we came back, the manager would go ‘Ah Mr Moon’. And he would be put in the worst hotel room that needed decorating each time, and we paid for it.”
If what Daltrey says is true, it sounds like a win-win for everyone involved. The Who got to be destructive, and then the hotel was able to redecorate on the band/record label’s dime. Frankly, this sounds practically philanthropic!
