Fayetteville State University will roll out a Bachelor of Science in Special Education in the fall of 2026. The College of Education built this program because North Carolina desperately needs more licensed special education teachers.

Right now, the HBCU offers only an undergraduate minor and a Master of Arts in Teaching for Special Education. This new degree will let way more students enter classrooms with full licensure and the skills they need from day one.

Students will tackle coursework while getting real experience in actual schools. Graduates can pursue K-12 teaching certification and choose a concentration, like elementary education, reading, or mathematics.

"The launch of this new bachelor of science in special education marks a powerful step forward for Fayetteville State University and our community, preparing highly qualified special education teachers, strengthening local schools, and shaping the future through the power of teaching," said Jocelyn Smith-Gray, interim associate dean and chair of the department of early childhood, elementary, middle grades, reading, and special education, according to JBHE.

The university created this degree after seeing how bad staffing shortages had gotten statewide. North Carolina lacks certified teachers who know how to work with students requiring specialized instruction.

“FSU’s undergraduate Special Education program prepares educators who recognize the potential in every learner and advocate for inclusive opportunities,” said Chandrika Johnson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education, in the FSU release. “Our efforts ensure that exceptional students receive exceptional support, as every child deserves a path to success.”

Classes kick off fall 2026. This bachelor's degree expands what the university offers.
