Steve Smith Sr. To Be Inducted Into North Carolina Sports Hall Of Fame
Even as dreary as this past NFL season has been for the Carolina Panthers, fans still have reason to rejoice in 2023. It was announced this week that legendary Panthers WR Steve Smith Sr. will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame!

Smith joined the Panthers as a rookie in 2001, where he would begin a lengthy and impressive 13-season run with the team. Over the years Steve had garnered the reputation as one of the most reliable wide receivers in the league, earning the affectionate nickname “Agent 89″ from his fans.
But in 2005, Smith was able to tap into a whole other level of offensive wizardry. Smith managed to pull off a hat trick of mythic proportions that season by leading the entire league in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns. Standing at just 5’9”, he served as a reminder on the field that it’s not about the size of the dog in the fight, but rather the size of the fight in the dog.
But it’s not just his outstanding on-field record that has earned Smith this honor. He was always known as an incredibly gracious player who loved to show appreciation to his fans, often being seen sticking around to sign autographs long after each home game.
I myself have had a brief but touching interaction with Agent 89. When my dad retired in 2022, my brother and I thought it would be a cool retirement gift to buy a Cameo from Steve, who my dad is a huge fan of. He came through in a big way, sharing tips for enjoying retirement with my dad and even shouting my brother and myself out.
Steve Smith Sr. is one of the greatest players of the 21st century, and a total class act to boot. It makes sense why he would be a part of a milestone induction class for the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame as part of its 60th induction ceremony. In an official news release from the Panthers website, president of HoF Board of Directors Dr. Jerry McGee commented on the achievements of all of the inductees for the latest class. “…they are representative of the reach throughout the Charlotte community, the state of North Carolina, the United States, and beyond.”
The official induction will take place May 10 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Congratulations to Steve Smith Sr. for this incredible achievement! Now I’m gonna go watch his highlights to wash the taste of the Panthers’ 2023 season out of my mouth.
