For those looking for a way to learn, celebrate history and have a whole lot of fun this weekend, why not attend the annual Scotland County Highland Games?

The kickoff to the event will be Friday, October 6, 2023 with The Highland Fling from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at McDuffie Square in downtown Laurinburg, North Carolina.  There is no admission to this event.

You may find it surprising that this area was once home to more Highland Scots than anywhere else in the nation.

Saturday, October 7th will be packed with a full day of activities.  The day will wrap up with an evening Concert at 8:00 p.m. in the Avinger Auditorium on the campus of St. Andrews University.  The address is 1700 Dogwood Mile, Laurinburg, N.C. 28352.

The address for the games is the North Carolina Rural Heritage Center, 13043 X-Way Road, Laurinburg, N.C.

The event will culminate Sunday morning with a worship service at 11:00am at the historic Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church in Laurinburg, N.C.  The church is located at 15301 McFarland Road in Laurinburg, N.C. 28352.

It's that time of year when we all start thinking of finding the perfect pumpkin and making canned jams and other goodies! I've found the best place to score these seasonal delights are at farmers markets in North Carolina. Searching for the best local farmers market can be a fun and rewarding experience. As a southern gal who loves her fresh produce, I can tell you that there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for the perfect market. Here are some tips to help you find the best local farmers market:

    Durham Farmers Market

Durham has so much to offer and this market is near the top for must do activities in the area. Reviewers are raving: This farmer's market is good because it has the seasonal vegetables/fruits that you're looking for, but also the atmosphere with the food trucks and different types of people. There are musicians playing music, kids playing, skate boarders skating, and just that great Durham eclectic vibe of people. I always find good produce and there is great parking and people watching.

The Cary Downtown Farmers Market began in 1996, when three small family farms wanted a place to sell their products directly to the community. A strong community has developed at the market over the years. The town of Cary has come to know and trust the farmers who make their food while sampling produce, learning about where and how the food is grown, and talking about recipes with other shoppers. Onsite there are cooking demos and lots of kid's activities.
