Matthew McConaughey Slams Hair Transplant Rumors, Shares His Regrowth Secret
Matthew McConaughey is happy to have a full head of hair more than 20 years after almost losing it all, but he’s says that it isn’t due to hair transplants.
In his 2020 memoir Greenlights, McConaughey, 52, recalled buzzing off all of his hair after experiencing significant hair loss in the ’90s. In a recent interview with LADBible, the True Detective star recalled how the hair loss affected him. He heard that buzzing his hair off would be the best thing for it and was advised to shave it on a full moon in order to celestially summon the regrowth he craved.
However, he credited the regeneration of his hair to a commitment to “manual labor” explaining, “I get this topical ointment and I rub it into my scalp, once a day for 10 minutes. I was fully committed, I was fully committed to it – no Propecia, no nothing, it was just manual labor. All I can tell you is it came back. I have more hair now than I had in 1999.”
He continued, “You can go back and look at things like The Wedding Planner and those things; I mean, you’ll see, I was losing. I got a picture, turn of the millennium party in 2000 in Jamaica, I was looking down laughing and there was a baseball-sized bald spot on the top of my head.”
He also told the publication that others have looked to take credit for his surprisingly full head of hair. McConaughey said he learned from a Beverly Hills doctor that, at an international hair transplant conference, a doctor had claimed that he had given McConaughey hair plugs. “[The Beverly Hills doctor] goes, ‘Can I just look at your hair? Can I just feel it and see?'” he recalled. “I said, ‘Yeah man,’ and he goes ‘You don’t have transplants!’ I said, ‘That’s what I said, of course I don’t.'”
McConaughey said the doctor replied with, “I can’t wait to bust this guy’s nut next year when he raises his hand.”
To which McConaughey said of the surgeon, “He’s busted, man!”
