Adam Driver Was So Bored With A Standing Ovation, He Lights One Up
Adam Driver must have been suffering of boredom during a five-minute standing ovation at Cannes, that he started smoking a cigarette.
The actor was attending the premiere of his new musical film Annette, where he stars alongside Marion Cotillard, best known for her role as Mal in Inception. Despite Annette receiving mixed reviews from critics, the crowd at Cannes gave the Leo Carax-directed movie and his cast a standing ovation.
Annette is the first film from the French director since 2012’s Holy Motors in 2012, a surreal drama. Nine years later, Carax announced his follow-up would be a full-on musical film. Adam Driver stars as a provocative stand-up comic named Henry, and Cotillard portrays a renowned opera singer named Ann DelGreco. The pair fall in love and have a baby named Annette together, “a mysterious girl with an exceptional destiny.”
In a video circulating on Twitter, Driver can be seen clapping alongside Carax and Cotillard. As Carax basks in the applause, the video shows the actor with a cigarette in his mouth that wasn’t there earlier.

Per the The Independent, standing ovations have long been a feature of Cannes Film Festival premieres – as have films being booed for a lengthy amount of time. Recent films to have received boos include The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Personal Shopper.
In 2017, a screening of Bong Joon Ho’s Okja was halted due to non-stop booing when the Netflix logo played at the beginning of the film.
Annette will hit theaters August 6 in the U.S. theaters and on Amazon Prime video August 20.
