VIDEO: Eddie Vedder Appears on Lily Cornell Silver’s Mental Heath Series

Lily Cornell Silver, daughter of Chris Cornell, shared the latest episode of her Instagram mental health series, Mind Wide Open, and it features an in-depth one-on-one conversation with Eddie Vedder.

Embedded below, Cornell Silver shared the episode along with the following caption: "I am honored to be joined by a guiding light in my life, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. We discuss societal and political impacts on mental health, Eddie's own experiences, and the importance of activism and empathy."

Vedder touches on a number of different topics including the 2000 Roskilde Festival where nine people died during a crowd push toward the front of the stage during Pearl Jam's set at the Copenhagen music festival.

Vedder said, "It’s interesting, Roskilde, where there was issues with weather and the crowd, and a horrific situation where lives were lost in front of the barricade… it’s crazy to talk to you about it, because right before we went onstage…we got the news that our great friends Chris and Susan had just had a child, and her name was Lily, and we kinda cried some tears of joy… This was I think less than 15 minutes before we were gonna go on. And then we went out with you on our minds, and we were feeling empowered and emotional… and 40 minutes into the show, these terrible events happened."

He mentioned how Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey, who had experienced a similar tragedy in 1979 when 11 people died at a Who show in Cincinnati, offered their support and helped him get through the aftermath of the events.

Vedder said, "There I was in a fetal position, basically, and Pete said, ‘You can handle this,’ and I said, ‘I can’t. I don’t know, Pete, I don’t think I can. I’m losing it.’ And he said, ‘No, you can handle this…’ He empowered me to get my s--- together."

Cornell Silver launched her series on July 20 in honor of her father's birthday saying in a statement, "I created this interview series with the goal of helping to normalize and destigmatize conversations around mental health, and if it can make even one person feel seen and heard I will have accomplished my goal."

Cornel Silver first announced the series back in May saying, "Guests will include mental health professionals, public figures, peers, and others who will share their stories and struggles, as well as provide knowledge and insight."
