Indianapolis Colts Owner Bought David Gilmour’s “Black Strat” for Nearly $4M
David Gilmour made headlines last week when he auctioned off 120 of his guitars for charity, with his infamous “Black Strat” going for a staggering $3.975 million. So, who would have that kind of money to spend? Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.
Irsay is a massive Pink Floyd fan and he told Rolling Stone of his purchase, “I just f—ing love Pink Floyd, man, I cannot deny it. I think [Roger] Waters’ lyrics and Gilmour’s playing and their whole story and prominence is just so profound that I cannot say enough about my excitement for this. … David Gilmour stands by himself…But I love Strats, and this is the Strat. This is the one that was the signature guitar for those incredible Floyd leads.”
Irsay is no stranger to shelling out big bucks for some of music’s most-historic instruments. In 2015, he spent $2.2 million for a Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl drum kit used by Ringo Starr on some of The Beatles‘ earliest recordings. Irsay also owns guitars from John Lennon, Prince and Elvis Presley.
