Queen News Round-Up: Latest Box Office Totals, Album Chart Update
The release of the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has brought major success to Queen in more ways than one.
For starters, the film continues to gross big numbers at the box office. Per Forbes, the film earned an additional $30 million in the United States, and after ten days in theaters has grossed $100 million. Add that to other markets around the world, and Bohemian Rhapsody has earned a grand total of $285 million. Considering its budget of $55 million, that’s some serious profit!
The film’s success has also translated into Billboard chart success with the Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack coming in at number three on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, up 22 spots from the previous week. Queen’s Greatest Hits I, II & III: The Platinum Collection also saw some major gains coming in at number nine, up from number 194 last week.
(Fun Fact: The Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack marks Queen’s highest ranking on the Billboard 200 since the release of 1980’s The Game, which stayed atop the chart for five weeks and featured the Hot 100 singles “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”)
Meanwhile, Queen fans are furious with censors in Malaysia for heavy edits to Bohemian Rhapsody.
Per Maylay Mail, approximately 24 minutes of the film was cut by the Malaysian Film Censorship Board, with most of the cuts pertaining Mercury’s sexuality, which leave large holes in the film’s overall plot. This has led to many angry Malaysian fans to advise those looking to see the film to do so in another country where Bohemian Rhapsody is presented in its entirety.
